Whatcom House Movers Project...

THE RAISING OF AN ANTIQUE
IN CONWAY, WASHINGTON!

In 1890 one of Conway's oldest stores made its debut as a mercantile business selling grain and groceries.  During the years, it has had a long and varied history.  It has housed a hardware store, been a dance hall with a stage, an auction house and finally an antique store.  The present owners of the 110-year old antique store have refurbished many old things during the 5 years they have operated their antique shop, Curious Goods, but they were not quite prepared for their newest renovation project.

The flood-damaged foundation of the two-level 10,000 square foot building was in desperate need of repair.  The owners decided to raise the structure 3 feet in order to put in a new foundation.  Supported by steel beams and pilings and reinforced with panels of wood and braced with six cables, Whatcom House Movers, raised the 234-ton structure with jacks in 2-3 inch increments.  "It was necessary to raise the structure slowly and move everything at the same time to prevent the building from falling apart", said Whatcom House Movers' project foreman, Jim Johnson.

Curious Goods Antique Store opened its doors in November, 2000.
